Blazers Pushed to Brink of Elimination After Late Collapse vs. Spurs in Game 4

In this story:
The Portland Trail Blazers are disappointed after a Game 4 loss to the San Antonio Spurs by a score of 114-93 inside the Moda Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Blazers went into the fourth quarter all tied up with the Spurs, but they couldn't withstand the run San Antonio went on. The Blazers led by as much as 19 points during the game, but it wasn't enough to pull out a win against the Spurs.
With the loss, the Blazers are now on the brink of elimination, needing a win in each of the next three games in order to advance to the second round of the playoffs.
Blazers Build 19-Point Lead

The Blazers came out with a level of intensity that suggested they were ready to even the series. Utilizing a high-tempo transition game and sharp perimeter shooting from Deni Avdija, Portland carved through the Spurs' defense early on.
This 19-point cushion was built on the back of a disciplined defensive effort that forced San Antonio into contested mid-range jumpers, allowing the Blazers to dictate the pace for the majority of the first half.
Offense Goes Cold in Second Half

The momentum shifted dramatically as the Blazers returned from the locker room. What was once a fluid offensive system devolved into stagnant isolation plays, leading to a series of forced shots and unforced turnovers.
San Antonio adjusted their defensive scheme to take away the paint, and Portland found no answer, failing to buy a bucket during a pivotal scoring drought that saw their double-digit lead evaporate before the start of the final frame.
The Spurs shifted into a drop coverage that dared the Blazers to win from the mid-range, effectively neutralizing Deni Avdija’s ability to collapse the defense and kick to open shooters.
Spurs Make Statement vs. Blazers

In the fourth quarter, the Spurs proved why they won over 60 games in the regular season, outscoring Portland by a staggering margin to turn a tie game into a blowout. San Antonio’s execution was surgical, fueled by a 21-0 run that silenced the Moda Center crowd.
The Blazers only had one 3-pointer in the fourth quarter, while the Spurs had three.
By exploiting Portland's fatigue and lack of rim protection, the Spurs didn't just win the game, but also delivered a psychological blow that shifted the entire pressure of the series back onto the Blazers.
What's Next For Blazers?
Portland now faces the ultimate win or go home scenario as the series shifts back to San Antonio. In order to keep their season alive, the Blazers must find a way to maintain their offensive consistency for a full 48 minutes and shore up their perimeter defense.
With their backs against the wall, the coaching staff will likely look to shorten the rotation and lean heavily on their veteran leadership to navigate a hostile environment at the Frost Bank Center in Game 5.
The Blazers will face off against the Spurs in Game 5 on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. PT. Fans can watch the game on ESPN or stream it on the ESPN app.
