Former NBA commissioner David Stern is being encouraged to run for mayor of New York City by his friends, reports the New York Post.

The election will be held in 2017, and there is doubt whether current mayor Bill de Blasio will be re-elected. Like de Blasio, Stern is a Democrat, and has personally donated $311,400 to the party.

“He’s pretty bored,” said one source. “He’s always been interested in politics, and he’s always been interested in running for office.”

After 30 years as commissioner of the NBA, Stern retired in January 2014. He is credited with increasing the popularity of the NBA as well as well as introducing the salary cap and drug testing.

Despite his reported boredom, Stern is not interested in running, though he was “flattered” to be considered.

“I remain a happy Westchester resident, and am very busy as a senior adviser to a number of enterprises,” Stern said.
