In this story:

It was always known that Mother Nature could play a role between the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday.

That certainly is the case.

The club announced on Thursday night that the contest between Boston and Philadelphia has been delayed due to bad weather in the area.

Earlier in the afternoon, the Red Sox took to X and made it clear that the two sides will try to play the contest.

"We are consulting with Major League Baseball officials and multiple weather services to determine the status of tonight's game," the Red Sox announced at 4:46 p.m. ET. "Rain showers are expected in the Fenway area over the next couple of hours with conditions improving later tonight. With the Phillies not scheduled to return to Fenway Park this season, every effort will be made to play tonight's game.

"Gates are scheduled to open as planned and we'll share additional information as soon as it's available. Thank you for your patience."

Boston followed up on X and noted that the official start time for the contest is now expected to be 7:05 p.m. ET.

There was a time early in the day on Thursday when the outlook for the Red Sox and Phillies to conclude their three-game set wasn't great, to say the least. With all of the rain in the area, it wouldn't have been shocking if the game was postponed if there was an opportunity to make it up later on in the season. The Phillies won't be coming back to Boston, which complicates the matter.

So, the game being played in general is a positive if you're a Red Sox fan. The Phillies won the first game of the series on Tuesday night, 2-1. That night, Brayan Bello came in behind an opener and pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed just one earned run while striking out five batters. On Wednesday, the Red Sox got back in the win column, 3-1. Ceddanne Rafaela was the biggest star of the night as he blasted a homer after coming in to the contest as a pinch hitter.

On Thursday, Ranger Suárez will get a shot against his former team. Boston has an intriguing lineup, to say the least, against the lefty Jesús Luzardo

Boston entered the day 18-24 on the season. The club certainly needs a win. On the other hand, the Phillies entered the day, 20-23 and in third place in the NL East.
